Hudson Lab School + Greenburgh Nature Center

Real-World Learning Experiences Empower Students to Become Leaders and Changemakers

Hudson Lab School and Greenburgh Nature Center are proud to announce its exciting new partnership redefining the landscape of experiential education. In an ambitious collaboration, 4th and 5th grade students from Hudson Lab School worked hand-in-hand with the naturalists and conservationists at Greenburgh Nature Center to infuse project-based learning into the Center’s esteemed educational programming. This initiative was driven by two pivotal questions: How can learning centers inspire visitors while making their experiences fun and memorable? And how can we galvanize the community to take meaningful action?

Greenburgh Nature Center, a 33-acre nature preserve and wildlife sanctuary, is a cherished community resource, hosting over 100 local schools annually. Through its diverse programs and activities, the Center fosters a deep connection with nature and promotes essential principles of sustainability and conservation.

As part of this groundbreaking partnership, Hudson Lab School students embarked on a series of immersive field trips to the Nature Center, delving into its Animal Adoption Program and exploring its cutting-edge curriculum on recycling and sustainability. Their educational journey also took them to the historic Philipse Manor Hall, Rye Nature Center, and the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, where they studied best practices in designing hands-on educational experiences that captivate and inspire young minds.

The students met with Alix Dunn, Executive Director of Greenburgh Nature Center, to present their innovative findings. Their proposals reimagined the Center’s curriculum from a student-centric perspective, with actionable strategies to ignite environmental activism.

The culmination of their efforts was a meticulously planned fundraising event, aimed at driving community engagement and support for the Nature Center. From designing interactive learning stations to crafting compelling sponsorship packages and press materials, the students demonstrated extraordinary creativity and collaboration. On June 7, 2024, the 4th and 5th graders hosted over 100 guests, successfully raising nearly $5,000 to benefit the Nature Center.

This partnership exemplifies Hudson Lab School’s commitment to transformative, real-world learning experiences that empower students to become leaders and change-makers.
